Good news: Ohio Senate passes bill banning abortions on babies with Down syndrome

The Ohio Senate approved a bill Wednesday that would prohibit abortions based on a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. Senate Bill 164, also known as the Down Syndrome Non-Discrimination Act, passed on a 20-12 vote, and would protect preborn babies with Down syndrome while they are at their most vulnerable.

Pro-life groups in the Buckeye State applauded the move, noting that the legislation is a step in the right direction towards protecting every human lie.

“We are continuously encouraged by how Ohio is on the forefront of protecting the unborn,” Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis said in a statement. “All Ohioans regardless of the gender, skin color or disability deserve the right to live out their God given potential and purpose.”

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Frank LaRose, told that aborting a child simply because of a diagnosis is the most lethal form of discrimination.

“We should not be making a judgment of one life being more valuable than another,” LaRose said. “To me, it’s a question of medical ethics as much as what kind of society we want to live in.”

The Ohio House passed its version of the bill earlier this month. Now both legislative bodies must now reconcile their differences on the bill before it heads to the desk of Gov. John Kasich.
