The water plays very important role when it comes to body functions. Good hydration is important for concentration, ideal body weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, urinary infections, and for the regulation of the problems with the stool (constipation). Among the many dilemmas that makes young parents to struggle is: whether an infant should not be given water, and is this liquid “forbidden” and unnecessary until the sixth month.
Despite the recommendations of the World Health Organization – mothers need to breastfeed their babies for at least half a year and in that period they should not give extra fluids to the baby, because if they do that in the first six months of the baby`s life the process of breastfeeding is interrupted . Doctors however, consider that you should not be exclusive when making these and similar decisions.
You need to offer water to the baby, and if it is thirsty it will drink it, pediatricians conclude. The assertion that the infant will suckle less if it drinks water, it is not valid. Surely the mother can`t give water to the baby before feeding them. It is important that the baby is offered water after a meal or between meals.
How much water can be given to babies?
Depending on the temperature and humidity, and the weight of the baby, also its activities, is recommended daily 80 milliliters of fluid during the first weeks of its life and 160 milliliters between the third and sixth month of life.
How much water should children drink daily?
It is thought that a child aged one to three years should drink about 1.3 liters of water throughout the day. Considering that the child has less weight than an adult, it gets more easily dehydrated. Also, young children often ignore thirst because they are occupied by playing games. When the children realize that they are thirsty it is too late and it that has already led to high level of dehydration.
To the younger children who can not tell you that they are thirsty, offer them water whenever you drink, and it is best if that would be every hour. It would be good that the child’s bottle is filled with water at every time and to be visible, so they can just take it.
