Twins & breastfeeding

It is a known fact that breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby. But, mothers who have twins easily give up on this idea, usually because they are not sure do they have enough milk for the both babies. So, below we answered for you the most common questions about this subject.

  1. Should you breastfeed the babies at the same time?

No. You need to breastfeed every baby separately. In this way, you give attention to your child and at the same time you make sure the baby  has latched on properly and it’s sucking. We recommend you to do a 24-hour schedule that will ensure you how often and how long you feed every baby, and also how many diapers you spend for each baby durinf the day. If you store your milk into a bottle, you will know how much milk every baby is drinking. But remember:  You and your babies are the ones who determinate the way of breastfeeding. Some mothers consider that it is better to feed the babies at the same time, while others prefer the other way. Try out different approaches, for example during the day feed the babies at the same time but in the evening feed every baby separately, and you will see what way fits them the most.

  1. Do you have enough milk for the twins?

Most women are able to produce enough milk for the twins, and some even for more babies. Follow this advices to determinate how much mlik every baby needs:

Start right after the childbirth: Breastfeed your babies after the birth, 8-12 times during 24 hours. The more you breastfeed, the more milk you produce.

Use breast pump: If your babies are premature and you can’t breastfeed them, pump you breasts and store the milk. Find a special pump so you can pump the both breasts at the same time, in order to save time. After you see how much milk is needed for every baby, other members of the family can help you by feeding them with bottle.

Switch the breast: It allows you to produce more milk. Also, by changing breasts the eyesight of the child is improving. Pay attention to switch the breast every day or every meal.

  1. Can you feed the babies with combination – your milk and formula?

Even though that mother’s milk is best for the baby, many mothers decide to add formula in the eating schedule of the baby. For instance: You can replace one or few  “breastfeeding sessions” with formula. Consult a pediatrician in order to decide the best solution for you and your babies. If you feed the babies often with formula and breastfeed them less than 8 – 10 times a day, consider that the amount of your milk will decrease.

  1. What else should you remember when it comes to breastfeeding twins?

It can be hard, but it is not mission impossible.  If you can’t figure it out on your own, ask advice from your doctor. Don’t be shy to ask for help from the husband and close family members. Be patient and tolerant and eventually you will find your way.
